Just returned from another weekend in Detroit. Met up with some of the best guides one could ask for. This photo was taken in western PA on the way to our destination. We were here for 20 minutes and got a $50 parking ticket. (bastards) Over the next few weeks I will be posting more photos and info/stories from our trip.

A large group of photographers were given the opportunity to legally visit D&D Silk Mill. The mill closed in 1957 and all of the equipment is still inside as if it just closed.

The first picture was taken in December 2010. The Susquehanna River was completely frozen and the sun was setting in the distance which made for a pretty cool shot. The second picture was taken in February 2010 after the blizzard.

Cursive played a few shows in the area last year and I was fortunate enough to get some shots of them when the played the Abbey Bar in Harrisburg.

Joint Chiefs of Math / Best Friends

Last year there was a fest in Philadelphia called 2PieceFest3. All bands obviously only had 2 members in them. Some of the bands included: 1994!, Bubonic Bear, Deer Friends, Footnotes, Japanther, Sisters, Slingshot Dakota and Weekends. The only band I was able to shoot was Joint Chiefs of Math.

Another band that played that night was Best Friends. This is a video that Frank shot.

Oak Hill Hospital

Oak Hill Hospital was notorious for its poor conditions and abuse of patients. It opened its doors in 1925, and was shut down in 1991 by a federal court. There have since been numerous civil and class-action lawsuits involving patients and employees of this place.

During the early years, Oak Hill was considered a "state of the art" facility. With a good reputation this hospital set the standard for other states to follow. With declining conditions decades later many patients filed lawsuits against the hospital for reasons of abuse, neglect, poor living conditions... even medical testing. A small morgue was all that stood between the patients and a cemetery on site where graves have been repeatedly uncovered by erosion.

Hudson Hospital

The entire facility was built over the last three decades of the 1800's. As psychiatry moved away from inpatient treatments, it began to decline in use until its closure in 2001. Today, it is slowly deteriorating out of public view as it awaits reuse.

Chantal Hospital

This hospital began with a single building on one hundred acres of land and expanded to, at its peak, over thirty buildings and nine hundred acres. The campus is massive and I was only able to explore a fraction of it.

Suffolk Breaker

The "Suffolk Breaker" was constructed in 1930 and began operating in 1932. This breaker was the largest coal breaker in the world. 20 miles of railroad track were laid, 3,800 tons of steel and more than 10,000 cubic yards of concrete were used. A mile and a half of conveyor lines, 25 miles of conduit, 118 miles of wire and cable and 20 miles of pipe were installed. When the breaker was constructed it was divided into two sides. Each side could be operated independently, producing 12,500 tons of coal a day. Once the raw coal enters the production process within the breaker it took just 12 minutes to pass through the entire breaker. The breaker was in operation for 31 years.

Albright Fabrics

During its heyday in the early 20th century, "Albright Fabrics" employed over 1,400 people and was the world’s largest producer of Nottingham lace. It had bowling alleys, a gymnasium, a barber, a fully staffed infirmary, and owned its own coal mine and cotton field.

Founded in 1897, the company used looms that were made in Nottingham, England, stood two and a half stories tall, were over 50 feet long, and weighed over 20 tons. During World War II, the company expanded its production line to include mosquito and camouflage netting, bomb parachutes, and tarpaulins.

The company was downsized to only 50 employees before shutting its doors in 2002.

I revisited a blast furnace this past week. This place is massive. It was built in 1884. Some of the furnaces no longer exist, but the ones that are there were designated as a National HIstoric Landmark.

White Wedding

Over the summer I had the opportunity to help my friend Shaun shoot a wedding. This was my first experience with shooting such an event. Below are some shots from that day. I have been asked to shoot a few more since then, which I am looking forward to.

Friends in abandoned places

There is nothing better then meeting up with with people that you have never actually met before just to share the same passion of documenting abandonment.

All 3 of our recent discoveries were located in New York State. The first location required my alarm to be set for a 11:30pm wake up call, for a 5am meet up. We met up with 2 cool dudes from Detroit and an excellent guide from the NY state. Aside from the 1 mile hike in the woods at pre-dawn and the fact that I am pretty sure we all crawled in some sort of animal feces, we made it safely inside. The first 3 photos were taken at this location.

The second location is what made my weekend. Met up with 3 more guys from NY, to make the total 9 guys, in which 6 of them I had never met prior to this weekend. The next 4 photos are from that location. The last photo was taken by UrbanDecay.

The last location consisted of a old projection room and a bowling alley, not to mention about 1 hour sent wondering tunnels and hallways just to find ourselves lost.

I am glad we saved this last location for the last day. Rain was moving in and we were exhausted. Cass Tech has some famous alum such as:Jack White, Diana Ross and John DeLorean.

9 hours, 6 locations, 5 guys, 3 days and 1 car. That pretty much sums up the trip to Detroit. We only covered 1% of the abandonment in that town. Day 1 consisted of Lee Michigan Central Station and Lee Plaza.

Night Exposures

One thing I want to start experimenting with more is night exposures. The first photo was taken from our balcony while we were at the beach last summer.

If you look closely, on left hand side there was a guy with a flashlight walking in circles. Also, in the left part of the sky, you can catch a glimpse of trails from the stars

This photo is one of my favorite night exposures that I have haven captured. It was a 30 sec exposure with me running from the right side of the frame to the left, all while holding a flashlight with white and red LED lights.

Silkscreening

Joe and I have been messing around with some silkscreening stuff that we had laying around. We are currently only printing 1 color screens, until we get in the groove of things, but look for stickers/shirts to come in the very near future. Below is a sample of the first shirts that were printed. So far the only size available is a medium.

My House...Part 2 of 2

The second to last photo is an original Lincoln Highway marker. The "Lincoln Highway"was the first road across the United States. This is located at the end of my drivevway.

The last picture is actually a shot of the steeple that is on my neighbors roof. I had to stand on my not so stable fence and pull myself up onto his roof. While doing this I managed to scrape my forearm on the shingles. The only way down was to jump off of the 10' ledge onto the driveway. (I didn't completely think the whole thing through prior to climbing up there)

There are days that go by that I don't get a chance to take any photos and sometimes it bothers me, so I decided to walk around my yard and snap shots of things I see on a daily basis. Well, the sunflower is no longer with us but it did grow to be about 9' tall before the cold weather came.

Hickey School

In 1850 this center began as the House of Refuge in Baltimore City. It was an early effort to separate children from adult criminals in jails. After a few name changes, the center moved to its present site near in northern Baltimore County. In 2005, the Governor orderd that the center be closed and be replaced with a new regional detention center.

Paper Mill

This site has been part of the area's industrial scene since 1798. It closed all of its operations in 2000. In 2002, the site was a possible location for the new minor league baseball team, however that fell through and is now a local college agrees to buy the property as space for expected expansion in the coming decades. No set plans are known. The going price is be tween $5 million and $6 million.

Old and Forgotten

Pennhurst is no hidden secret to any photographer who enjoys tresspassing and exploration. Hidden deep in the woods and what seemed like what took hours to hike there, we finally came upon the massive abandoned structures that once housed thousands of patients. The underground tunnels made it very easy to explore several buildings without even stepping outside of any of the buildings.
